Hospitality & Institutional Management

Head of Hospitality and Institutional Management Department

Welcome to the Hospitality and Institutional Management (HIM) Department at OTVC. It is my pleasure to welcome you to one of the institution’s vibrant academic departments dedicated to developing competent professionals for the hospitality, food service, hairdressing, and cosmetology industries. Our department is committed to imparting the knowledge, practical skills, professional competencies, and positive attitudes necessary for trainees to succeed in an ever-evolving and highly competitive service sector.

The Hospitality and Institutional Management Department plays a critical role in preparing skilled and innovative professionals in Food and Beverage Management, Hairdressing, and Cosmetology. These fields continue to offer immense opportunities for employment, self-employment, and entrepreneurship both within Kenya and internationally. Our mission is to provide quality training that empowers learners to become productive professionals capable of meeting industry demands while contributing positively to society and economic development.

The department offers training through three recognized educational pathways: Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), National Industrial Training Authority (NITA), and Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET). These programs were introduced in compliance with the TVET Act of 2013, which aims at enhancing the quality, relevance, and accessibility of technical and vocational education in Kenya.

The TVET programs are examined by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), ensuring that trainees receive nationally recognized qualifications that prepare them for employment and further education. The CBET programs are examined by TVET CDACC and focus on competency-based training that equips learners with practical skills aligned to industry requirements. NITA programs are specifically designed to accommodate trainees who may not have attained Form Four education, enabling them to acquire valuable technical skills and earn nationally recognized certifications through NITA examinations.

Our department prides itself on having a team of highly qualified, dedicated, and experienced trainers who are committed to mentoring and guiding learners towards academic excellence and professional success. We are particularly proud to boast the only Degree Holder in Hairdressing and Cosmetology in the country, giving the department a unique advantage in offering advanced training, including Diploma-level qualifications and Level 6 CBET programs in Hairdressing and Cosmetology. This distinction places OTVC among the leading institutions in the provision of quality hospitality and beauty-related training.

At OTVC, we strongly believe that technical education should go beyond theoretical instruction. Our training approach emphasizes hands-on practical learning through well-equipped workshops, salons, food production units, and service laboratories that simulate real workplace environments. Through these facilities, trainees gain valuable practical experience that enhances their confidence, technical proficiency, creativity, and professionalism.

The department currently offers the following programmes:

Beyond technical competencies, the department places great emphasis on nurturing important professional attributes such as communication skills, customer care, teamwork, leadership, creativity, innovation, integrity, and entrepreneurship. These qualities are essential for success in today’s hospitality and beauty industries, where service excellence and customer satisfaction remain key drivers of growth and sustainability.

To our current trainees, I encourage you to remain committed to your studies, actively participate in practical training, and embrace every opportunity for personal and professional development. The skills, discipline, and experience you acquire during your training will serve as a strong foundation for your future careers and entrepreneurial ventures.

To prospective students, parents, industry partners, and stakeholders, I invite you to join us in our mission of producing competent, innovative, and ethical professionals who will contribute significantly to the growth of the hospitality, cosmetology, and service industries. We remain dedicated to delivering quality training that transforms lives, promotes self-reliance, and supports national development.
